One of the area’s best-loved sports centres has been reduced to rubble.

Demolition work on the Epic leisure centre in Ellesmere Port, which began in December last year, means that the building has been removed from the town’s skyline for good, with just a few bricks and part of a wall remaining.

Going, going, gone: These pictures show the different stages of the demolition job on the Epic

The Epic began life as an indoor swimming pool in the late 1960s, before being developed into a larger sports centre in the early 1980s.

The leisure centre was not just a sporting focal point for the town for more than 40 years. It was also used for countless roller-discos and bouncy castle birthday parties and, for a time, was the only place in Ellesmere Port where you could watch a film on a full-size cinema screen.

When the bulldozers moved in at the end of last year, it prompted a flood of nostalgia from our readers as they recalled the times they spent there.

There is even a Facebook group called EPIC Ellesmere Port Memories.

The Epic has been replaced by the £15m Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Stanney Lane, which opened last summer.
