An apparition of a Roman soldier or possibly a medieval knight may have been captured on camera by a paranormal investigator sitting in the upstairs of one of Chester’s oldest pubs.

Witnesses sitting in the function room of Ye Olde King’s Head in Lower Bridge Street, Chester, also claim to have heard footsteps at the same time as the images were taken in low light conditions.

Paul Rowland, of the Paradox Paranormal group, has been taking photos in the pub, which was recently visited by TV’s Most Haunted, for the past two years but this is only the third time his pictures have yielded spooky results.

Some of the latest images show strange areas of darkness but one in particular appears to be of a translucent figure and Paul wonders if it could be of a Roman centurion or a medieval knight.

Paranormal investigators look towards colleague Steve Russell who appears to be accompanied by a translucent figure on his left, to the right of the opening, in the upstairs of Ye Olde King's Head in Chester

Paul, a private hire driver from Saltney, explained: “I think we are looking at a helmet, without the side protectors, with the head looking slightly down. If it wasn’t for the other bit, I might have been a bit more dismissive, but there is what appears to be a sword handle because it fits in with the waist line. There might even be armour down the side.

“For someone who rides a horse it would only have been on the sides, it wouldn’t have been on the groin area. Don’t ask me why they might be in that building but Chester has gone through a medieval as well as a Roman period.”

Two pub-goers, a couple, who decided to join the four-strong paranormal group on the evening, also “heard footsteps” as the photos were being taken, apparently coming from the same area.

Paul, who is friendly with pub owner Harry Achilleos because of their shared interest in the paranormal, added: “On most evenings, you get nothing. We do question and answer sessions to see if anything reacts to what we’re asking. Sometimes we do.”

This is not the first time Paul has taken ghostly images at the King’s Head. In bedroom one, he once took a picture of what appeared to be someone sitting on the end of the bed, casting a shadow on the wall, and of a separate whirling image in the same spot.

On previous occasions, shouts and screams have been heard by investigators in the same bedroom, once involving an old man and a young girl.
