DELIGHTED pupils of Ellesmere Port Catholic High School celebrated making the grade in their GCSE results.

Dozens of teenagers achieved the grades they wanted and the celebrations began soon after the envelopes were opened.

There were impressive performances from students, some of whom only recently arrived in Britain and do not have English as their first language,  and a string of A* passes.

Examinations officer Corrina Long said: “The determination all students have shown in achieving wide-varying successes was tangible.

“The fall to 56% of five+ GCSE passes, including English and maths, from the 59% of last year was less than anticipated.

“Given that, with just a few exceptions, all examinations were GCSEs, rather than GCSE equivalent assessments, this represents continued strong performance.”

Amy Leigh-Corcoran and Emily Barton, both 16, were thrilled to achieve As and Bs and are able to stay on at the school in the sixth form.

And Olivia Collom will be able to go to Birkenhead Sixth Form College thanks to her A and B grades.

Other students celebrating were Rachael Bedward, who was relieved to have achieved an A* and other A-C grades, and Rachel Parker, whose A-C grades included three As.

RE teacher Julie Wildman said this year’s results for her subject were excellent.

“I am so very proud of them all,” she said.
