PARENTS have launched a fundraising drive to help pay for a school extension.

Children from Crowton, Weaverham and Acton Bridge joined in the fun at a teddy bears picnic at Crowton Village Hall on Friday to officially launch Crow-ton Primary School's extension fund.

The school's fundraising committee is hoping to collect £8,000 toward the completion of a classroom which will enable existing space to be used for an assembly area and gymnasium.

The chairman of the committee, Mark Relf, said: 'The day informed people about the school's new fundraising campaign.

'As we are a Church of England school, we have to pay a proportion of the total cost ourselves, in addition to money given by the Church.

'We can, with a little help from our friends, raise this money and have an enjoyable time doing it.' Work began on the extension earlier this year, after planning permission was granted in January.

Headteacher Alison Thacker said: 'We are all really excited about the project - though I will be more excited when it is finished!'

The classroom will be used by youngsters in Class 3, who have had to be housed in a hall.

Mrs Thacker added: 'The hall has been adapted to a classroom, so the partitions will be taken out and it means we will soon be able to hold PE lessons and serve lunches in there.'

The first major fundraising event, on June 19, is a sponsored parachute jump by six parents.

Other events lined up later in the year include a race night, quiz night, hotpot supper, Las Vegas Night and an auction of promises.
