AN ALPINE adventure awaits two friends when they take their specially prepared 4x4 on some of Europe’s toughest terrain.
Mike Metcalfe, 47, of Swireford Road, Helsby, and Kevin Cochrane, 57, of Warren Court, Frodsham, will spend three days driving 190 miles through the French Alps to raise money for Cancer Research UK Ltd.
The gruelling event, known as “La Croisiere Blanche” or “The White Challenge”, is organised by a professional French motoring organisation and the pair have had to have a Jeep Cherokee 4x4 especially equipped.
Security engineer Mike, married with two children, said: “About a year ago I bought my first off-roader, a completely standard Jeep Cherokee, and started to try a few off-road trips and picked up a few off-road magazines in which I read about an event taking dozens of vehicles across the Alps.
“In May I took my best friend Kevin out for an afternoon coffee and chat to Manley Mere with a few off-road mags to read through. Kevin is fighting against cancer and has undergone 10 sessions of chemotherapy and is now on a treatment of radiotherapy.
“The conversation basically went ‘do you fancy putting something back into the system in the form of a charity event?’, ‘yes, let’s do it’, and the rest is history.”
Mike’s jeep was prepared through Specialist Leisure in Warrington and he funded its preparation himself.
Mike said: “I am seeking local business support to cover event costs and I am hoping to raise in excess of £3,000 through donations from our family, friends, businesses and work contacts.
“Both Kevin and I will be stepping completely outside our comfort zone and hopefully our actions will bring some comfort to many cancer sufferers in the future and inspire others to help in the fight against this horrendous disease.”
The challenge starts on January 27. To pledge support, visit www.justgiving.com/ alps2009 or call Mike on 07771 834650.
