More than 300 children, parents and family members enjoyed samba and country dancing, carnival drum and mask competitions as part of The Firs School’s fun day.

The event also featured stalls run by the children themselves, sweets, cake pops and a barbecue.

As well as running many of the stalls themselves, the children were able to attend samba drum workshops, mask making and visit the book stall.

There were lots of different activities: a tombola, bouncy castle, find a fossil and teddies stalls, cakes and an ice cream van.

Laura Chadwick, committee member for The Firs Parent Group, said: “The afternoon was more about fun than fundraising, everyone had a fabulous time and we still raised £924 for good causes.

“Thanks to everyone who donated including Weaver Hall Museum and Chester Zoo.”

Lee Baumanis from local samba band, Karamba Samba, said: “The response was great from the crowd and a sign of success for us is when those attending join us full hearted in the workshop, which they did.

“Congratulations on a successful event.”

Headteacher Margaret Denton judged the children’s design a drum or mask competition.

She added: “We had an incredible number of people on Saturday, despite the showery weather.

“Everybody had such a brilliant time and it was great to see the children exploring new ideas and responsibilities, joining in and being with their families for such a fun time together.”

Hook the Duck game, an annual favourite

The Firs Parent Group’s next event is the annual Firs School Ball at the Grosvenor Hotel Chester on June 21, in aid of The Christie charity.
