The Frog pub on Liverpool Road has closed – just over three months since it reopened.

The manager of the Upton pub says it has been ‘unbelievably let down’ by the community and that owners Enterprise Inns has not given them enough support.

It shut its doors last Monday (March 14), having opened on December 4 last year.

A statement from management on The Frog’s Facebook page reads: “Due to the massive increase in rent, rates and electricity and very few local customers using our pub, we have decided to close the doors.

“May we take this opportunity to thank our loyal customers. We enjoyed your visits every time.”

Manager Simon Griffiths told The Chronicle four people have lost their jobs due to the closure.

“When we opened, there were people from the local community in there but they never came back,” said Simon.

“We have been unbelievably let down by the community. Nobody turned up on quiz nights.

“There was no support from the brewery either.”

Refurbishment in the pipeline

But a spokesperson for Enterprise Inns said the operation had not been meeting the ‘expectations of all involved’ and it was mutually agreed with the publicans that the business agreement was terminated.

The Frog will now undergo an extensive refurbishment.

The spokesperson added: “We aim to have it back open and trading in May and hope that the residents of Upton, Chester and further afield will visit to enjoy its fantastic new offering.”

Fans of The Frog shared their farewell messages on social media.

Lisa Marie wrote on their page: “Such a shame really could be a lovely place if more of the locals supported the pub, good luck with whatever you do in the future x.”

While Katie Loke said: “Will miss Paul, the girls and the Friday hog roast. One of the few dog friendly pubs too - such a shame. Good luck to you all x.”
