A COMMUNITY picnic and a garden party for senior residents are highlights of a programme of events that will bring people in Frodsham together in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The town centre will be festooned with flags and red, white and blue bunting, made by local Guides and Brownies, as a backdrop for town council-organised community celebrations. The festivities kick off at 6.30pm on Monday, May 28, with residents invited to share a celebratory cake and buffet with councillors before the annual town meeting at the parish hall in Church Street.

A giant Jubilee jumble sale will be held on Saturday, June 2 in Castle Park, with community groups and clubs setting up stalls to boost their profiles and coffers from 10am to 12.30pm.

On the same day, from 2.30pm to 5pm, a garden party for over 70s residents will be held in the park with buffet and entertainment, including a concert by Frodsham Silver Band and a sing-a-long led by members of the George Formby Society.

Eligible residents who would like to attend are asked to contact Anne Pitt at the town council office in Castle Park on 01928 735150.

The town centre will also be buzzing with street entertainers on the Saturday, and a farmers market is planned for Main Street.

Residents are invited to bring their own food and gather for a picnic and family sports day in Castle Park on Sunday, June 3, starting at 12.30pm with a short service of thanksgiving.

Town Crier Julie Mitchell will herald the afternoon’s entertainment, and revellers will be able to take souvenir photos of themselves peeping through wooden cut-outs of the Queen and Prince Philip, created by Frodsham’s Will to Work Workshop.

It’s hoped a big screen will also be erected in the park so picnickers can watch live TV coverage of the Jubilee River Pageant on the Thames.

A community beacon will be lit on Overton Hill around 8pm on Monday, June 4, followed by a fireworks display, and on June 5 Frodsham Film Society is inviting residents to a free screening of the Helen Mirren movie, The Queen, at Frodsham Community Centre at 2.30pm.

A family Jubilee walk around Frodsham will be led by Cllr Graham Bondi on Sunday, July 8, starting at 2pm from the station car park.

Councillors plan to open discussions with Cheshire West and Chester Council this year, aimed at eventually providing a band stand in Castle Park.
