Police are trying to identify a body found near caves in Frodsham which is believed to have been there “for some time”.

The investigation is ongoing but the death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.

Officers are currently trying to identify the deceased and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

In a statement, Cheshire police said: “At 12.36pm on Friday, October 10, 2014, Cheshire police were called to the scene of a body which was found in the vicinity of Frodsham caves near to Simon’s Lane.

“It would appear that the body had been there for some time and the death is not believed to be suspicious at this stage. Work remains ongoing to identify the deceased and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Witnesses report seeing the police underwater search and marine unit lorry at the scene whose officers may be called in to recover badly decomposed bodies from land or property which are deemed too hazardous for officers at the scene or undertakers to recover.

The incident has sparked speculation on social media sites like Facebook.

Jan Egan wrote: “Very sad, maybe they had no family, that’s why they were there so long.”

John Whitby commented: “I think everyone will just have to wait until the body is identified, it could be a homeless person that died of exposure, a drug addict who overdosed in there or as suspected, a suicide of an unhappy person (still no confirmed news as to age or sex of the deceased), but whoever it was, I hope they have gone to a better place and can rest in peace.”
