MEMBERS of Frodsham and District History Society gathered for a milestone meeting to celebrate the group’s 30th anniversary.

Frodsham resident Arthur Smith – who co-founded the group with Richard Martin, Howard Talbot and Derek Hekle – cut a celebration cake during the gathering, hosted by society chairman Betty Wakefield, which included an illustrated talk by Bernard Dennis MBE on Sir Thomas Egerton: Keeper of the Queen’s Conscience.

The society, formerly known as Frodsham and District Local History Group, held its first meeting in October 1981 at Frodsham Community Centre.

For many years the society, which now has almost 80 members, was also based at Castle Park Arts Centre, but now meets at Main Street Community Church on the first Monday every month, from 7.45pm.

Sir Alan Waterworth, former Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside and a renowned local historian, is president of the society, which has published many small books and pamphlets about the area.

Its collection of about 8,000 photos, prints, postcards and negatives, donated by residents, was digitalised in 2007, funded by a £29,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and is now stored at Cheshire Record Office.

The society has launched its pictorial archive which can be accessed on www.frodshamhistoricimages.co.uk.
