CONVICTS, penguins and ghouls were just some of the sights on display when Helsby and Frodsham Lions hosted the club’s annual district convention.

More than 200 members of the 105BS district obeyed the black-and-white fancy dress code as they gathered at Runcorn’s Holiday Inn for the event.

High Sheriff of Cheshire William Lees-Jones opened proceedings before attendees heard messages from the Lions’ international president and the Queen.

The AGM was then followed by a banquet and ball, which was funded entirely through membership fees.

Margaret Marsh, president of the Helsby and Frodsham Lions, came up with the theme idea.

“I thought of it because I had used it before for a different charity event,” she said. “The Friday night is always fancy dress, with a different theme each year, and black-and-white was a good idea when not everyone wants to be in fancy dress.

“There were certainly some sights to be seen.

“The Lions are very serious about raising money but every so often we do enjoy doing something funny!”
