Two teenage sisters born and bred in Frodsham have become archery champions in Australia.

After taking up archery in Brisbane, where they emigrated with their family five years ago, Emily and Jessica Sutton have gone on to win gold medals in this year’s national championships in Adelaide.

Emily, 17, shoots with a compound bow and has qualified for the World Archery Field Championships in Croatia later this month.

Meanwhile, younger sister Jessica, 15, who shoots with a recurve bow, has qualified as the only girl representing Australia in the 2014 in the Youth Olympic Games 2014.

Jessica said: “I’m pretty excited. This is a great honour but I am also nervous.

“Obviously this is my first time competing at the Youth Olympics and I am nervous about what it will be like.

“I went to a come and try session in 2009, when I was nine. I was rubbish!”

She has since gone on to achieve 50 Australian tournament records, with more than 200 state records and was the best overall girl in the 2014 nationals.

The girls’ proud grandparents Mike and Carol Sutton, of Frodsham, said: “We are so proud of what Emily and Jess have achieved so far in their archery.

“It has all been down to their hard work and passion for the sport. We were pleased to be able to support them at the Australian Youth National championships in Adelaide this year where they were amazing.”
