A councillor has accused Frodsham and Helsby councils of not being charitable enough to the communities they serve.

Cheshire West and Chester Councillor Andrew Dawson, who has given more than £10,000 of his community grants to struggling projects in Frodsham and Helsby, hit out at the councillors for their lack of financial support.

Cllr Dawson whose donations have helped support renovations, buy equipment and employ essential members of staff, questioned why Frodsham Town Council, and Helsby Parish Council, did not do the same.

“The big picture is why do Frodsham and Helsby not do the same sort of thing.

“Couldn't they do something like this, they could really make something out of it. But it is up to them really.

“Frodsham received £125,000 in council tax this year, that should be enough for them to ask why are we not doing a similar sort of thing for the community.”

Cllr Dawson was one of three councillors to hand out £3,000 to local community groups, at a vote on Wednesday where local people decided which group should gain a grant.

But Helsby Parish Councillor Terry O'Neil believed that the event was unfair as the grants were only awarded to projects within Frodsham.

“The down point is that because there were 15 applications and nine were from Frodsham and six from Helsby when they voted they naturally voted for projects in their own communities.

“In the end it was three groups from Frodsham who got the £1,000 grant. It would be better if one was held in Frodsham and one in Helsby.”

Cllr O'Neil defended the Parish Council saying that the council do give to community projects and charities but they only have £500 allocated in their current budget.
