VOLUNTEERS are hoping to give a new look to a popular Chester pathway.

The Friends of Duke’s Drive organisation has been set up with the aim of sprucing up the route with new information boards, seating, signage and recycling bins, as well as measures to curb anti-social behaviour.

Cheshire police, Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Grosvenor Estate have all lent their support to the new group.

Debbie Owens, who is overseeing the Friends of Duke’s Drive, said: “I am a qualified teacher and youth worker and I am attempting to drive forward the setting up of Friends of Duke’s Drive.

“The overall aim is to promote the woodland to the local community and engage them in activities that will benefit the woodland environment, such as tidy up days, fundraising for seating, sculptures and signage.

“In addition, I will be organising Forest School sessions for children and young people.

“We are looking for interested people who can volunteer their time and get involved in helping establish the group and future events.”

The group, which is open to all local residents, dog walkers, cyclists, parents and young people, will meet monthly to discuss ongoing management and community projects in the woodland.

PCSO Jo Pendrey said: “Friends of Dukes Drive group is an opportunity for the community to become involved in a fantastic initiative.

“Debbie has some great ideas for Duke’s Drive and with the support of the community, as well as partnership agencies, I’m sure the group will be a huge success.”

The first meeting of the Friends of Duke’s Drive group is on Wednesday, January 25 at 6pm in Eccleston Church Hall. For details, call Debbie on 01244 671206 or 07765 634288.
