SHOPPERS in Chester city centre are been urged to keep their wallets and purse close by after three people were targeted by purse thieves over the weekend.

The purses were stolen from handbags in the Frodsham Street, Foregate Street and St Werburgh’s Street areas of the city between 2.30pm and 4.30pm on Saturday (13).

Sgt Ian Stead said: “I would ask shoppers to make sure they keep their purses at the bottom of their handbags and keep their bags zipped up and on their shoulder.

“In the majority of purse theft cases, purses have been at the top of the bag and the bags left open or on the floor.

“Chester is a safe place to shop but like all cities we do get people who come into the city to commit these sorts of crimes. Thieves can take a purse without the owner even realising at the time.

“Simple things like remembering to zip up your bag and put your purse or wallet away after paying for items in a shop make a huge difference.”
