RESIDENTS who have been calling for traffic restrictions on a village road were dealt a second blow within a month.

The residents of Chapel Street formed the Wincham Action Group five years ago in response to the increasing the volume of HGV traffic using their street.

And the action group thought they had finally made headway earlier this year when Vale Royal Borough Council announced plans to build 600 homes in the area - which would have brought improvements to the transport infrastructure with it.

But earlier this month the proposals were scrapped.

Now plans have been approved which residents fear could make the traffic even worse. Members of the council's planning committee have approved plans to build eight new industrial units and two office units at the site of Concraft Ltd, on Chapel Street.

Clare Dockney, a member of WAG and a resident of Chapel Street, said she was appalled there was going to be even more industrial development on her doorstep.

She said: 'I am disgusted by it. Years ago there was no industry on this side of the bridge, but now lots has come.

'I don't think it is fair - we said yes to building all those houses but now we are getting industry instead. We don't want more industry coming into the street.'

The site which the units would be built shares access with a carpet warehouse.

A report to members of the planning committee said there were no significant highways concerns or residential amenity considerations which could justify a refusal. It said it was unlikely that any HGVs would visit the site because of the size of the units.
