CHILDREN from four primary schools in Blacon are taking part in a road safety competition in which the winning posters will be displayed on lampposts outside their schools.

Schools taking part are JH Godwin, Dee Point, Highfield Community and St Theresa’s Catholic primary schools.

Pupils have been asked to design posters which will contain a road safety message that will encourage cycling or walking, or to highlight road safety issues within the Blacon community.

The competition is organised in partnership with Catch 22, Cycle Chester and Cheshire West and Chester Council Road Safety Unit.

Two winners from each school will be presented with their prizes - a top of the range mountain bike and cycle helmet. At a later date their posters will be made into signs and will be erected near each school.

Cheshire West and Chester Council Road Safety Officer, Lue Ellis, who is running the project alongside Ian Evans from Catch 22, said: ‘The competition announcement in assemblies at each of the schools proved very successful.

“It is open to children from aged 4 to 11 with prizes awarded in two categories, infants and juniors, and it’s hoped that the posters will encourage cycling and walking and highlight ways for children to be stay safer on the roads.

“I am confident that the talent in the schools will shine through and once the posters are made into signs and erected on the lamp posts they will raise smiles in the community whilst spreading road safety messages to Blacon residents’.”

Closing date for entries from each of the four schools is Friday, May 14 with winners announced at a special exhibition on Saturday, June 26 at Highfield Primary school.
