FORMULA One and Indycar champion Nigel Mansell is to swap horsepower for pedal power in a UK cycle challenge.

And one of the few stops along Nigel’s national journey will be the Live! New Scene Youth Club in Newton, Chester.

While there, Nigel, who has been recovering from a 180mph crash in last month’s Le Mans 24 Hours motor race, will be presenting achievement awards to Live! members in recognition of their efforts.

Nigel will be joined by his two sons Greg and Leo Mansell, as well as ex-Tour De France cyclist Magnus Backstedt and professional cyclists Ian Williams and Susan Williams for the 1,200-mile event in aid of UK Youth.

The Chester stop this Sunday, from 4.30pm, will be one of just 17 stops during the 13-day bike ride being undertaken by the team, and Sandra Pollitt, Live! co-ordinator, said the youth centre was delighted to be one of the destinations.

She said: “It’s going to be absolutely wonderful. We feel honoured to have been chosen.

“What we have here is a variety of bikes for all abilities. It started a few years ago from when Cheshire County Council had a few bikes and since then we have raised money to build on them.

“We work with disabled people and they use the bikes to be with their friends and they are able to be active and keep fit.”

There will be plenty of free activities for children of all ages to get involved in during the visit.

Chester Go-Ride will provide cycle skills training and North Shore is bringing a challenging range of BMX obstacles.

New Scene volunteers will provide entertainment in the form of African drumming.

There will also be a vintage bike display and a barbecue.

Nigel Mansell is hoping to raise £1m for UK Youth via the cycle challenge, to help celebrate the charity’s centenary.

The cycling team will be promoting UK Youth’s Positive About Youth campaign.

Nigel said: “We are one of the largest youth charities in the UK and every day we challenge young people to do all sorts of new and exciting things in order to raise their aspirations and realise their potential.

“I want to do something demanding as well and in doing so encourage everyone to be more supportive of young people.”
