A PRIMARY school is launching a special annual event to honour the memory of one of its teachers who died last year.

Staff and pupils at Duddon St Peter’s Primary School were devastated when Year 2 teacher Jay Fazakerley, was killed in a road smash on the A51 on July 21 last year.

The 32-year-old had worked at the school for two years and was a popular member of staff.

Now the school want to ensure Mr Fazakerley, who was an avid Liverpool FC fan, will never be forgotten, by holding a football tournament each year in his memory.

The Jay Fazakerley Cup will officially be launched on May 24, with a number of local primary schools getting involved to take part in two mini-leagues.

Tarporley, Kelsall, Tarvin and Utkinton primary schools will be among those participating and proceeds from cakes and drinks sold on the day will go to the Action For Children charity, in Mr Fazakerley’s name.

Susanne Wearden, a teacher at the Duddon school, who has helped to organise the event, said it was a way of acknowledging Mr Fazakerley’s love for both children and football.

“Jay was passionate about football and was totally committed to coaching and playing football with young children,” she said.

“He had wanted to set up a cluster league so we are carrying on what he intended.

“The Duddon team will be made up of children that Jay taught and they loved his energy and enthusiasm for sport and because he loved taking learning outside of the classroom,” she added.
