A DEVOTED couple whose first date was at a Chester FC football match are celebrating 60 years of happy marriage.

Great grandparents Robert and Margery Andrews who live in Shrewsbury Way, Saltney, share a love of sewing and making tapestries, alongside their life long dedication to Chester Football Club.

And today (Thursday) the couple, who are in their 80s, are eagerly awaiting a telegram from the Queen as they celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.

Robert, 85, met his wife to be Margery, 82, while they were living in Frodsham and Helsby when they were in their 20s.

After a first date watching Chester FC, the couple married at St Paul's Church in Helsby, and now 60 years on they are still completely devoted to each other and their football team.

One of six grandchildren, Claire Whitehead said the family have followed in Robert and Margery's footsteps, with grandchildren and great grandchildren supporting the team through thick and thin.

“Even now they don't go to the matches, they always like to know how the team are going on. They share a love of the cricket as well.

“We are all totally amazed by their dedication to each other. It takes a lot to get to the stage where you have been married for that long.

“They say that their secret is a lot of give and take, and sharing memories together. “We all really hope they have a lovely day. We love them both to bits.”
