ONE of Chester’s most famous sons has retired from football after an illustrious career – and Chronicle readers have been paying their own tributes.

Michael Owen played his last game as a professional for Stoke City at Southampton on Sunday aged 33, 15 years after his famous World Cup goal against Argentina.

Claire Louise Larkin said: “As a kid growing up Michael was my hero, he was the first striker I can remember!

“Many happy times I cheered him on in the Kop with my Dad! Shame he couldn't stay injury free.”

Charlotte K Mallon said: “People who bad-mouth Michael Owen are only jealous of his accomplishment and I wish him all the best in his very well deserved retirement.”

Gary Sharples said: “Good player, could have been great if not for injury and not joining Man U sooner, best of luck for the future.”

And Geraint Wyn Jones added: said: “Great player, only regret I have was that he was eligible to play for Wales and what might have been.

“However, undeniably a fantastic player and ambassador for the sport and I wish him every success for the future.”
