AIRBUS in Broughton has won a National Road Safety award for Wales.

The accolade was given in recognition of their efforts in creating better driving techniques and reducing risks while behind the wheel for employees including apprentices at the site.

The award, presented in the commercial category, was collected on behalf of Airbus by transport manager Jim Gallagher and apprentice training adviser Darren Collins. The duo were presented with a commemorative clock and a cheque for £100, which was donated to the Airbus charity fundraising scheme.

Jim Gallagher said: “The award recognises the company’s commitment to road safety at all times – not just when employees are on site.”

To help employees improve driving skills, the wing makers enlisted the support of Flintshire County Council’s driver development course instructors.

The course includes both classroom and practical driving sessions as well as a written test. The course has been completed by more than 60 employees.

In addition, the Pass Plus Cymru scheme, aimed at providing young drivers with additional driving skills and experience, has been introduced to Airbus apprentices aged between 17-25.

The course covers potential high-risk driving such as motorway and night driving. By the end of 2007, more than 50 apprentices had received the advanced lessons.

Darren Collins said: “Since nearly half of all fatalities on the roads of North Wales involve 17-25 year olds, it is more important that we offer special tuition to our younger, more inexperienced drivers.”
