HOUSEHOLDERS in Hough Green claim criminals are setting off fireworks late at night to signal the arrival of drug consignments.

The Weekly News has heard from three separate householders on Cradley and Hough Green Road who say they are being disturbed in the early hours by explosions.

The latest incident happened at around 2am last Friday.

One woman said: 'It's a nightmare being woken up in the early hours by these bangs and it has been going on for weeks.

'We think it is the drug deal-ers who are setting them off to let people know that the drugs have arrived. Something needs to be done about it.'

A police spokeswoman said: 'Residents who experience problems with nuisance fireworks should contact the Widnes Community Action Team on 0845 458 6383.

'If they leave contact details we will phone them back within 24 hours.'

'To report crimes they should contact 0845 458 0000 and 999 for emergencies.'
