Three firefighters with links to Ellesmere Port were among Long Service Medal recipients.

The dedication of firefighters and support staff who had served for up to 50 years with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service was officially recognised at a ceremony attended by the Lord Lieutenant for Cheshire, David Briggs.

Local recipients of the Long Service Good Conduct Medal for 20 years service at the prestigious event were Anthony Fletcher, Andrew Gray and Robert Martin.

Mr Fletcher is watch manager at the town’s fire station on Wellington Road.

He recently became a member of the International Search and Rescue team which could see him deployed overseas to assist in disaster relief work.

Mr Gray works on red watch at Wellington Road while Mr Martin spent nine years at Ellesmere Port before moving to Wilmslow fire station.

'Exemplary service'

The Lord Lieutenant said: “The Fire Service Long Service and Good Conduct Medal is issued by Royal Warrant and I was therefore honoured to make the award on behalf of Her Majesty.

“I extend my sincere congratulations to all medal and award recipients on achieving exemplary service.

“The job they do requires humility and respect often delivered under arduous conditions.

“Theirs is a special job, a vocation for which they have been deservedly honoured.”

Chief Fire Officer Paul Hancock added: “The special awards were presented to individuals who have served for 20, 40 and 50 years and who have, in that time, shown exemplary behaviour.

“I would like to congratulate everyone who received a medal and an award which is a great honour and thank them for their dedication to the service.”
