FIREFIGHTERS from Chester answered an emergency call from colleagues in Flintshire yesterday when a huge blaze broke out at the Corus steel factory.

The city crew was part of a team of eight appliances and two special units called to the Shotton site at noon as the company's emergency plan was brought into operation.

The blaze broke out in a disused building which was being dismantled by a team of contractors. Noone was hurt, even though firefighters confirmed they were told to withdraw at one point because of an explosion.

Earlier, workers in a neighbouring building were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The North Wales Police helicopter was called into action as massive clouds of smoke came billowing over the site, heading for Garden City, where residents were reassured the smoke was not toxic.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and the operation was still continuing as The Chronicle went to press last night.
