FIREFIGHTERS have warned homeowners to ensure their smoke alarms are working after a discarded cigarette caused a small fire at a house in Lache on Tuesday (April 30).

Fire crews were called out to the property on Barwoods Drive after one of the occupants tossed the cigarette onto a sports bag which then caught fire.

The occupant managed to move the bag into the garden and evacuate his family before crews arrived.

Although the blaze caused no lasting damage, a spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service stressed the importance of having a working smoke alarm fitted in your home.

“Even if you have a smoke alarm connected to the mains you must ensure that there are batteries fitted and that it works,” he said.

“We have now fitted the property with two working smoke alarms.”
