A TARPORLEY woman not only completed the gruelling Great North Run – she also succeeded in raising £500 each for two charities.

Fiona Hardy, 20, of Waste Lane, completed the half marathon in just two hours and 16 minutes and raised £1,000, to be split equally between Meningitis UK and Tarporley War Memorial Hospital.

Fiona said the whole day was a terrific experience: “The crowds all along the course were so supportive and there was a carnival atmosphere at the finish.

“My mum and dad came up to Newcastle and were at the finish to cheer me along the final few yards.

“I would like to thank everyone who supported me and sponsored me. The two charities do such fantastic work and I am pleased that they will benefit so much.”

Fiona’s parents, Charles and Sandra Hardy, of the Old Fire Station Chocolate Shop, said they were so proud of Fiona.

Charles, who inspired Fiona to take up running, said: “I hope Fiona will continue with her running and that the Great North Run 2008 may be the start of her preparations for London 2012.”
