A fifteen-year-old girl died after being hit by a train near Port Sunlight.

Emergency services were called to the station today after the girl, believed to be a Year 11 pupil at Wirral Grammar School for Girls, was hit by a train between Port Sunlight and Hooton at 10.30am.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said the girl was pronounced dead at the scene this morning.

He said: “Our officers were called to Port Sunlight railway station at around 10.30am on Monday, 10 November, following reports of a person struck by a train.

“Colleagues from Merseyside and North West Ambulance Service also attended.”

He added: “The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Tributes were paid on social media to the teenager, who has not yet been named.

Cornerstone Church Wirral, based in Port Sunlight, posted on Twitter: “Praying for the family of the girl who lost her life this morning at Port Sunlight train station.

"Such a sad story of tragedy.”
