ONE of South Cheshire's oldest residents is celebrating her birthday with family and friends.

Queen Victoria was on the throne when Ethel Hollinshead was born 104 years ago.

Her niece, Beryl Fox, says the farmer's widow from Barthomley is still sprightly.

Beryl describes her aunt as 'a feisty lady', adding: 'She is still very sharp and takes a great interest in what is going on in Barthomley so I always make sure I take her the parish newsletter to read.

'She has always been involved in the community, and was a founder member of the village's women's institute.

'Even in her 90s she would ride her bike and take part in community events like litter picks and village festivals.'

Mrs Hollinshead, whose maiden name was Whittaker, was born at Bank Farm in Crewe Green. She married Charles Hollinshead in 1930 and moved to a farm in Barthomley, where the couple stayed until retirement, when they moved to Mere Road, Weston.

The pair did not have children and she was widowed in 1987, but continues to lead an active life.

Family and friends turned out to wish Ethel a happy birthday at Alsager Court Nursing Home, where she has lived for the past three years.
