WHEN Macmillan asked supporters to complete a sponsored mile, Keith and Jenny Haines went a step further - and completed 193 of them!

The couple of Tatton Drive in Sandbach fulfilled their long-held dream of walking coast to coast across northern England.

Jenny said: 'The walk crosses the country from the Irish Sea at St Bees Head in Cumbria to the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay on the Yorkshire coast.

'It was devised by Alfred Wainwright, legendary fell walker, writer and illustrator, and passes through three National Parks, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors, with wonderful scenery, flora and fauna.

'When we first thought of tackling the walk, it was more of a personal challenge. We had done lots of walking before and wanted to test ourselves to the limit.

'When friends heard about our plans, they offered to sponsor us. We had read about the Angels appeal and wanted any money raised to help local people.

'Having lost loved ones to cancer, we contacted the Macmillan appeal office to make sponsorship arrangements.'

Their effort coincided with the Macmillan Miles Challenge which asked people to do a mile in any way, walking, running, swimming, cycling, skipping or even hopping.

Jenny added: 'The walk took us 14 days, averaging 14 miles a day, although one day we covered 23 miles, with optional climbing in the Lake District.

'One unexpected bonus was meeting people from all over the world along the way, including many Americans who visit the UK just to do the walk.'

They expect to make nearly £300.
