SOLDIERS from Widnes have been extending their season's greetings to friends, family and partners back home on the other side of the world.

The two soldiers have sent messages to loved ones and are looking forward to seeing them again in 2005.

Private James Williamson, 19, based in the Falklands with 1 Queens Lancashire Regiment, said in a message to his girlfriend Lynsey Patterson: 'Merry Christmas babe, I'll be seeing you soon - luv James. I miss you loads... you know what I mean. A big hi to all the lads as well!'

To his family and friends he said: 'I just wanna wish everybody back at home in Widnes a Happy New Year, sorry I won't be there but I'll see u in March.'

Steven Connor, 34, of the Royal Artillery, said to his children Alicia and Kieran: 'I miss and love you lots and can't wait to see you in the New Year.'

UK troops are currently committed to peace-keeping protection and rebuilding countries including Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands.

And despite the often harsh and hostile conditions, the troops are making every effort to enjoy a little festive cheer, having traditional Christmas dinners, carols, cards and gifts from home.
