HALTON Citizens Advice Bureau has teamed up with electricity company nPower to help Sure Start families in Halton avoid the pitfall of debt by reducing their electricity bills.
nPower has generously donated more than 1,000 low energy light bulbs to the CAB and it will now distribute them to local families.
Hitesh Patel, manager of the CAB, said: 'We all know how expensive it is to raise young children especially with Christmas coming up. We aim to contact as many Sure Start families as possible between now and Christmas, do a benefit check to make sure they are claiming all the benefits they are entitled to and if they are working, we can check if they are paying too much tax.
'Those families who are entitled to a qualifying benefit like income support will then be offered these free light bulbs to help them reduce their bills and save some money.'
The CAB plans to give away the light bulbs in packs of four and, depending on how they are used, they can save a family a massive £250 off their electricity bills.
Debbie Worswick, a CAB volunteer advisor and also a registered Sure Start parent, said: 'It's really surprising how many families we come across who just do not know what benefits or grants are available to them.
'In the last six months alone we have helped Sure Start families claim more than £150,000.'
The CAB is now recruiting more volunteers to join its advice team in the New Year.
