FAMILIES are urged to get on their bikes and ride through Chester Zoo as part of a cycling event this summer.

The nine-mile loop ride, called The Chester Family Fun Ride, goes through traffic-free parks and the middle of the zoo, where it will pass by the giraffe and elephant enclosures.

It starts and finishes at the Countess of Chester Health Park where there will be a mini cycle show including a marquee with lots of free activities for children and adults.

The route is flat and goes along the cycle paths by the canal, then through the city and the countryside. The ride, on Sunday, July 5, is being organised by Pennine Events, one of the UK’s leading cycling events’ organisers, on behalf of Cheshire West and Chester Council.

It is part of this year’s Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool Bike Ride 2009 – one of the largest mass participation cycling events in the UK - and celebrates Chester’s new status as a Cycling Demonstration Town.

Mark Sandamas, director of Pennine Events, said: “This encourages individuals and families in Chester to try cycling.”
