Watch this cute Asian elephant calf at Chester Zoo stagger to its feet seconds after being born.

The rest of the herd even comes over to help.

The baby boy was born to mum Sithami at the end of a 22-month pregnancy on Wednesday (January 18).

You can see her kicking up sand to stimulate her calf, but it does not take long for the little one to be able to stand up.

Another baby elephant has been born at Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo is celebrating the second elephant born at the attraction in a month, after Indali Hi Way was born to mum Sundara on December 17. They also have a one-year-old half sister Nandita Hi Way.

Elephants team manager Andy McKenzie said: "Elephants are hugely sociable animals, so this is an incredible boost to the group.

“Mum Sithami delivered her calf onto deep, soft sand and her instincts immediately took hold as she started to stimulate him, encouraging him to get to his feet by kicking up sand around him.

"The rest of the herd then excitedly gathered around and within just a few minutes they had helped him up, which was great to see."

Keepers were able to keep track of the latest birth on CCTV to make sure everything went smoothly.

Asian elephants are listed as endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN’s) Red List.

Chester Zoo CEO Dr Mark Pilgrim added: “Asian elephants are an endangered species, threatened by habitat loss, poaching, disease and direct conflict with humans.

“We hope that news of her arrival will generate more much needed awareness of these incredible animals and the pressures for survival that they are faced with in the wild.”

Chester Zoo is part of a breeding programme coordinated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) that is focused on sustaining the elephant population in Europe.
