THIS is what a proposed housing scheme for older people will look like if it goes ahead on Northgate car park in Chester.

Nearby residents are being consulted about the plan which would see the land leased by Cheshire West and Chester Council with the facility built and run by Arena Housing.

The Extra Care Housing, designed to promote independent living for the over 55s, is for 131 one and two-bed apartments and communal facilities, with 24-hour on-site care and support.

Funding for the development would be assisted by a £4.3m grant from the Department of Health.

It would be built on the long stay Northgate car park offering housing for rent, to buy and shared ownership.

There would be restaurants and day care facilities would also be provided.

Building work is planned to start next February, subject to planning permission and confirmation of grant funding.

Meanwhile, outline planning permission has also been agreed for an Extra Care scheme on the site of the former Highfield Infant school in Blacon.

This would provide 63 apartments for older and disabled people plus communal facilities for use by the wider community.

The school buildings would be demolished to make way for the development.

A similar development is proposed for Newton although this may include some short break facilities for older people.

A council document says both the Blacon and Newton schemes are subject to securing an appropriate business partner.
