A SINGLE-storey extension had permission at a village school.

The application was made at Guilden Sutton Church of England Controlled Primary School, Arrowcroft Road, Guilden Sutton.

The single-storey school is in the Green Belt and has homes on three sides, according to a report.

No objections to the new build, at the front of the school, were made by neighbours who were consulted.

Referring to the need for very special circumstances to justify building in the Green Belt, planning officers said the school had pointed out the extension was needed to improve its facilities.

The school building was undersized and the staff room was inadequate as it had to be used as a library and by the after school club.

There was also a lack of private meeting space at the open plan school, no sick bay and insufficient storage.

At times corridors had to be used to teach smaller groups.

The extension would provide medical facilities, additional teaching space, confidential meeting rooms, space for the after school club and for local groups such as Brownies, Guides and Beavers.

It would also be used by peripatetic music teachers for lessons.

The application was recommended for approval and the borough council agreed permission.
