VISITORS to Chester Market are enjoying a huge welcome as they are greeted by an exhibition of Chester Giants.

Following the success of last month’s Giant Carnival, a selection of giants from the growing collection are on display at the market hall until the end of August.

Cllr Samantha Dixon said: “The Chester Giants are unique to the city and a wonderful way of celebrating our heritage.

“I am delighted to see the giants on display in the market – I am sure they will bring a smile to the faces of shoppers and traders alike, and hopefully attract more people into the market hall.”

References to giants can be found in Chester’s City and Guild Records dating as far back as 1327.

The first of the Chester family – father, mother and two daughters – were re-created in 1988 based on the technology available during the 17th century.

From these first four giants has emerged the community interest company Chester – The Giant City, which produces the 12ft-14ft models that represent a variety of people, occupations and visions.

Earlier this month it was revealed the company has been successful in securing a £60,000 grant from the Queens Jubilee Millions Fund, which will fund the creation of 60 Queen Elizabeth II giants by communities across Cheshire.
