A FREE drop-in support service for redundant Vauxhall workers has been set up at Ellesmere Port Library.

The project, organised by Standguide Training, provides former staff at the North Road plant with advice and information on new employment opportunities.

Last May the carmaker announced 900 jobs were to be axed at its factory in Ellesmere Port in a bid to increase productivity and reduce costs.

And last month the first wave of workers left the site for the final time after the company revealed it did not expect to make any compulsory redundancies due to the number of volunteers applying for the severance packages.

Rob Bailey of Standguide Training said: 'We offer a friendly, informal, supportive and confidential service.

'Whether you want to find a job in automotive or have a go at something new, we can give you practical and realistic advice relating to every aspect of the job-search process.

'This is based on our experience of helping people to overcome the many difficulties they may face.

'By showing you how employers think about recruitment we help you to dramatically increase your chances of getting a quality job.'

For people wishing to remain in the car trade and who are prepared to consider relocating the advice sessions will provide information on Bentley Motors, Leyland Trucks and Toyota.

Mr Bailey added: 'The Burnaston and Deeside Toyota plants are a good prospect due to the profitability and scale of the company.'

The drop-in sessions are currently up and running and could continue over the coming weeks if there is sufficient interest.

The project is supported by JobCentre Plus, the borough council and the Vauxhall Partnership Group.
