THE Chronicle's annual Christmas Toy Appeal, run in conjunction with the Salvation Army, is now in full swing.

Once again we are relying on the generosity of South Cheshire residents to help make sure the festive spirit touches every family.

While Christmas is a time of celebration for most, many children in the region would go without if it was not for your contributions, and for the dedication of the Salvation Army volunteers who work tirelessly to spread the yuletide cheer.

This year's appeal will be the first not co-ordinated by volunteer Sybil Perry, who has retired after more than 30 years at the helm.

But having handed over the reigns to daughter Heather Newton, Sybil has simply found herself unable to keep away, and will be lending a valuable hand throughout.

She said: 'I always said I would retire at 70, but here I am still doing it! I think I'm slowing down a bit now, so I've handed over to Heather who's helped for years, anyway, but it's hard to give up completely.'

Sybil has seen the appeal go from strength to strength over the years, and last year just under 1000 children received Santa sacks, thanks to donations from Chronicle readers.

Volunteers were also inundated with donations for their Christmas hamper campaign.

More than 600 parcels were handed out to needy families.

But Heather said everyone involved was determined to do even better this time around.

Brand new toys, teddies, games, puzzles, books, selection boxes or arts sets for the appeal can be dropped off at the Chronicle offices on Victoria Street, Crewe, or at the Salvation Army Citadel, Prince Albert Street, Crewe.

Cash donations can also be made to buy items for food parcels and gift vouchers for older children.

Registration to receive gift parcels begins at the Salvation Army Citadel on Monday, October 31 between

9.30am and 12pm, and takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at those times up to Friday, November 18.

To qualify, you must produce proof that you receive Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance, and, to be eligible for a Santa sack, proof that you receive Child Benefit for a child under 16 years.
