CAMPAIGNERS fear a housing development will make an accident blackspot even more dangerous.

Concerns over the development of a residential estate near the Quality Hotel on Berwick Road and the conversion into flats of a building on the A550 Welsh Road have been voiced following the latest tragedy on the notorious stretch of road.

A 38-year-old Ellesmere Port man, who has not yet been named by police, died of the injuries he sustained in a collision at the Shotwick lights on November 30.

Welsh Road resident Ian Cheveau has been fighting for 12 years for a link between the M53 and the A550.

He said: 'The area is getting built-up but nothing is being done to the roads to cope with the expansion. We have a 70mph limit on a two-lane road.

'People come off the motorway and use it as a cut-through road to Wales. Every day is an accident waiting to happen.'

Mr Cheveau is joined in his appeal to the Highways Agency by fellow resident Maggie Bidgood, who has also been campaigning for a bypass for more than a decade.

The Highways Agency this week revealed some details of the proposed Deeside Parks scheme to be published early next year, which they claim will dramatically improve the flow of traffic along the A550.

The scheme, which has been a number of years in the making, covers the area from the M56 to the A5511.

Clive Naish, Highways Agency spokesman, said: 'Once published, these orders will give people the opportunity to see what's included.

'In principle, what is proposed is a free-flowing link road through improvements to the existing road.

'The details are yet to be confirmed but it is proposed that the two existing roundabouts be taken out and replaced with overpasses. The set of traffic lights will also be improved to stop traffic queuing and create a free-flowing road.'
