A FARMER claims it will cost him hundreds of pounds to clean-up the mess left by travellers after they invaded his field in Little Stanney.

The man, who prefers to remain anonymous, says the land on Rake Lane has been ruined as a result of the illegal encampment.

And he's so concerned that travellers may return to the site that he has barricaded the gates to the eleven-acre field, which he rents from the Church Commissioners.

The farmer said: 'There were about 40 vans or more which just invaded the field about three weeks ago.

'I had locked the gate and put manure in the way of the en-trance but they moved it.

'The field has been ruined. It's covered with scrap metal, plastic, tarmac and concrete as well as excrement.

'It's going to cost me hundreds to clean-up the mess. I use the field for raising livestock, usually sheep.

'I'm now going to have to clear the mess, plough the field and re-seed completely.'

A Cheshire Police spokesman confirmed that a court order had been obtained by the field's landlords and the majority of travellers had vacated on Thursday.

Officers were called to the site again the next day following reports that a small group of travellers had remained on the land. But when police arrived at 9.20am the field was empty.
