SPECULATION is growing that an upmarket pub chain is in talks to buy a £1.5m prime city centre location overlooking the racecourse.

Brunning and Price, which owns Old Harkers Arms, the Grosvenor Arms at Aldford and Pant-yr-Ochain at Wrexham, does not wish to comment over rumours it intends to buy St Martin’s Lodge, next to the HQ building.

It is believed Brunning and Price, which is headquartered in Aldford, would like to convert the site, which is set in 1.2 acres of grounds, into a bar and restaurant

A contributor to the Chester@ Large website commented: “If they get it right – and B & P will, on the drinks side at least – it should be a fantastic place. Expansive pub and large beer garden in the centre of town.”

Built in 1826, the lodge was designed by Thomas Harrison as his residence. Harrison also conceived The Grosvenor Bridge and restored Chester Cathedral and parts of Chester Castle.

The Grade II listed building was previously owned by Cheshire police but is now in the hands of an undisclosed property company.

It is a rendered brick construction under a slate roof with a mixture of rooms and basement storage. There are spaces for up to 35 cars.

It is located near to amenities such as the HQ building, which includes the council and Abode hotel, as well as lawyers’ practices.
