A GROUP of volunteers is under-going training to provide specialist emergency medical care.

The First Responders team is being equipped with the skills to give first aid treatment to casualties before an ambulance team arrives on the scene.

Community First Responders operates in conjunction with Mersey Regional Ambulance Service (MRAS) and responds to emergency calls.

Currently there are 15 people training to be First Responders in and around the Halton area.

The group will be provided with comprehensive training to save as well as support life for those people in need of emergency medical treatment.

The 13-week - 40-hour - training programme will result in a certified 'First Person on Scene' qualification from the Institute of Healthcare Development.

Many members of the group are staff at Halton Stadium, where training takes place each week.

Training is provided by paramedic Steve Evans, who has worked for MRAS for more than 34 years. He has trained more than 70 other volunteers, helping to establish nine First Responder groups.

On completion of the group's training, MRAS will equip it with automatic external defibrillators and oxygen units, first aid kits and a direct radio link to the emergency control centre.

Laura Carter, volunteer response manager at MRAS, said: 'I am so pleased we have been able to recruit such a capable and motivated group of volunteers for the Halton area.

'They seem to be relishing their training so far and I look forward to seeing them out and about, helping local patients in the very near future.'

Volunteer Phil Black said: 'I have personally suffered from the loss of a loved one due to a heart attack and hopefully Halton First Responders can make a difference to patients, especially heart attack patients in our area.

'All of the responders have their own reasons for volunteering, but overriding everything is their hope and willingness to make a difference to other people's lives.'

The group is looking for financial support to cover the costs of a lease vehicle and insurance. To discuss sponsorship or donate money, call Phil Black on 07748 232 097.
