Colourful boats will return to Ellesmere Port’s waterfront as part of the popular Easter Gathering and Sea Shanty Festival at the National Waterways Museum.

Taking place between Friday, March 25 and Monday, March 28, the significant event in the boating calendar marks the start of the summer cruising season where many boats will set off to other parts of the canal network following the festival.

Heritage stories will come alive throughout the weekend with the gathering of boats, lock demonstrations, boat trips, behind the scenes tours, crafts and activities for all ages.

An 'extra special' year

For the sixth year, sea shanty performers from across the country will be performing across the museum throughout the festival as well as in concert on the Friday and Saturday nights.

Graham Boxer, head of museums at the Canal and River Trust, said: “The Easter Boat Gathering is a popular event with both canal enthusiasts and visitors.

“This will be an extra special year as not only do we celebrate our 40th anniversary but also the 90th birthday of our historic narrowboat Gifford which has been with us from the start.”
