A cheerleading group based in Ellesmere Port has plenty to cheer about for its first birthday.

Ultimate Spirit Allstars cheerleaders has received a grant from the Big Lottery Fund – Awards For All programme.

The team was awarded £6,750 by the fund to purchase a full-size cheerleading mat which will give the team a larger area to practise in and continue to provide much-needed activity for young people in the Cheshire West area. The Big Lottery Fund is responsible for giving out 40% of the money raised for good causes by the National Lottery.

Ultimate Spirit Allstars is run on a voluntary basis by four coaches and two managers and currently has nearly 50 members aged five to 26 from Chester, Flintshire and Ellesmere Port.

Members have entered both regional and national competitions bringing home first, second and third place trophies.

Competitive cheerleading is a dynamic, high energy combination of stunts, tumbles, jumps and dance.

Members train up to three times a week and also dedicate time to improving their core fitness.

Head coach Natalie Christian said: “The team are delighted to have been awarded this grant and are excited that it will provide them with a better facility to train in, so they can continue their hard work prior to the start of the next competition season.”

Conditioning coach Gemma Edwards added: “We are excited to now also be able to expand our tumbling classes, so members can spend more time working on the more gymnastics-based elements of cheerleading.”
