A FORMER accountant won a hairdressing award.

Marie Hewitt from Elton, an apprentice at Techniques salon, Ellesmere Port, beat off stiff competition from major salons across Liverpool to land top prize in Mode Training Ltd’s first year category.

The 36-year-old had been an accountant for 15 years when she decided to quit and enrol on a hairdressing course at West Cheshire College in September last year.

After getting the apprenticeship at the Regent Street salon she began a course at Mode, who hold an annual celebration of achievement for learners.

Her model was Jess Ball, sister of Techniques salon owner Kate.

Marie said: “As it’s region based I didn’t think for one minute I’d win it. We’re only a small salon from Ellesmere Port up against big salons from Liverpool where they always seem one step ahead of the fashion industry.

“The design was all about creating what you can with hair and going to extremes. To say I’m proud is an understatement, I’m ecstatic!”

She added: “Accountancy suppressed my personality. Now I can throw all my creativity into hairdressing. It brings the best out of me.

“This proved there was something there all the time but it needed to be let out.”
