Police have closed Highfield Road North in Ellesmere Port while talks take place with a man 'making threats'.

A specialist officer is currently negotiating with the man, after Cheshire Constabulary say they were notified of an 'unfolding' incident at an address on the street at around 10.30am today (September 20).

But the force insists there is no need for members of the public to be concerned.

A spokeswoman told the Chronicle: "Officers arrived to find a man refusing to co-operate and making threats.

"There is a large police presence currently at the scene and Highfield Road has been cordoned off as a precaution.

"There is no need for the public to be alarmed."

'Rumours'

Social media speculation has mentioned a hostage situation and that a knife has been spotted by eye-witnesses.

This has, however, prompted Ellesmere Port Police to issue the following statement on Facebook: "We're aware of rumours circulating in relation

to the ongoing incident at Highfield Road. Many of these are untrue.

"Officers remain at the scene and are attempting to bring the matter to a swift conclusion.

"There is no wider threat to the public, and the community should not be alarmed."
