Police have confirmed the current incident in which they are talking to a man in Ellesmere Port who is 'making threats' is not a hostage situation.

A specialist officer has been at the scene in Highfield Road North negotiating with the man, after Cheshire Constabulary say they were notified of an 'unfolding' incident at an address on the street at around 10.30am today (September 20).

But the force, which has closed the road to the public, insists there is no need for members of the public to be concerned.

Speaking from the scene, Det Insp Chris Williams, of Ellesmere Port Police, dismissed rumours, saying: 'All I can say is it is not a hostage situation. We are working very hard to bring things to a safe conclusion."

Officers are telling people there is no cause for concern to the public despite speculation on social media of hostages and a knife being seen.

Plain clothes police officers can be seen outside one of the houses talking through an open window.

The incident has drawn a crowd of locals speculating as to the cause of the large police presence in their community.
