Tweets had been circulating claiming 27 people had been killed in shootings in the town.
Police said Ellesmere Port was one of a number of towns named in what appeared to be a series of similar hoaxes doing the rounds.
It was brought to their attention by a member of the public and they then sent out their own messages on their official social media accounts to reassure the reports were fake.
The original tweets claimed there had been a ‘brutal terrorist attack’ by ISIS, with 27 killed and a further 126 people injured.
