A group of philanthropic cyclists from Ellesmere Port are getting ready to ride more than 200 miles across Holland in aid of the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

The seven-strong team – comprising Ray Young, Dave Cowell, Cliff Walsh, Ian Shone, Ricky Bailey, James Aston and Craig Thomas – will rely on pedal power to take them across the country in just three days.

Dave has degenerative sight loss and will ride tandem with Cliff.

The so-called Flying Dutchmen have already raised more than £700 of their £1,000 target and they don’t set off until September 11.

Ray said: “Dave has received fantastic support from RNIB since his diagnosis and is riding to support them.

“We’re looking forward to it but training hard – 210 miles in three days will not be easy.”

They will pay their respects to those who fell in Operation Market Garden during the Second World War in Arnhem and Nijmegen.

Some of the money raised will also be donated to Blind Veterans UK and Help for Heroes.
